Countdown to (Evne)Xmas: Unwrapping our newest home EV charger

It’s that time of year when kids start to count the number of sleeps until Christmas. According to Cadbury's they need a little chocolate every day to help them do this, although as I recall from my childhood a tiny picture of a donkey or angel used to suffice. How times change.

O charge, all ye faithful

Here at Evnex we’ve been counting down the days too — in our case to the launch of the new E2 Flex home EV charger.

Times have changed this year in the EV market. Second hand sales now account for over a third of all purchases, and the arrival of the BYD Atto 1 has seen the entry price for a brand new vehicle fall to under $25k. Both developments have lowered the cost of driving electric, which is obviously music to the ears of a company whose vision is that every journey is powered by clean and affordable energy. But how can we help drive costs down even further?

It’s beginning to look a lot like Flexmas

Earlier this year Evnex launched the E2 Core as our most cost-effective charger, but the market has moved on so we’re back today to lower the price of smart charging even further. We’ve already installed over 1,000 E2 Cores, giving drivers access to features like solar smart charging, dynamic pricing integration with Amber, and load sharing across multiple Evnex chargers — but there are lots of drivers who don’t need these Core capabilities.

At least not yet.

You could go out and buy an entry-level charger so you can fill up quickly when power is cheap. But you don’t, because you also know that times will change — so eventually it won’t be fit for purpose.

You don’t have solar panels yet, so you probably don’t have a battery, and you’re unlikely to buy power from Amber. Maybe you’re still waiting for a smart meter so that you can get access to a time of use electricity tariff. And further out you’re looking forward to getting free power under the Solar Sharer scheme.

You have nagging doubts. Next year you’re looking at getting solar. And your other car will be going electric a few years from now so you’ll need two chargers with load sharing. You’re not ready to commit to Amber just yet, but before long a dynamic tariff will come along that looks great for you — and an entry-level charger won’t support it.

But the E2 Flex could.

You need simple grid charging today, but with the promise of a dynamic-tariff solar charging future. Thankfully the E2 Flex can solve that very problem.

Today it's an entry-level charger, but tomorrow it will grow with your needs. It comes with all the monitoring hardware for solar charging and load sharing, but initially that’s only used for home overload protection; a safety feature typically unheard of in this price range (in much the same way that presents of gold are rarely given to babies in stables).

At Evnex, we know that plans change. Solar panels get put off so you can go to a mate’s wedding in Fiji. The new car ends up being a company vehicle you charge at the office. You stick with your current electricity plan because they offer you free steak knives. With the E2 Flex, you only pay to unlock the rest of the capability when you actually need it — keeping your energy affordable from day one.

Have yourself a merry little Flexmas

Back when I bought my first electric car, with equal if not more enthusiasm than a child waiting for Christmas, I counted down to my last visit to the petrol station (sadly without daily chocolates). It cost me $140.

Since then almost all of my refuelling has happened at home while I sleep, and for a fraction of that price. An E2 Flex can be bought for little more than five trips to the petrol pump. That’s barely enough calendar doors to get the animals done.
